Honorable Mention
The City an Engine
Don Barnes

From here I see the city
in a frame
of highways that vault
above and dredge under
a patchwork of mirrors
pressed into sky.

The light rail curves
around west to south
onto a parallel line
with a coal train.
White cars skim deftly
beside open containers
that rock to an old rhythm.

In a wider grid of movement
cars and bikes
trucks
buses
people
running alone
or crossing in bunches
against the light
move together in a stream
of dynamic
human energy.

This city an engine
of change
presses time like olives
to distill a fragrant oil.
